The idea that govt is a "father christmas" whose function is doling out everything free to citizens, is what has brought us to our knees in Nigeria.

When the most talented of our people have obtained the heavily subsidized education that empowers them to be productive,
the next thing they do is to leave our shores in search of a meaningful livelihood

Our successful governments have focused too much on irrelevant (yes I said it) aspirations such as free tertiary education, free infrastructure, etc, while neglecting the most important human need
The most productive segment of any country's population are those between 18 and 35 years old.

Yet our misconception of govt duties has meant that we are chasing an impossible dream of educating every Nigerian up to tertiary level for free.

What has come out of this national
tomfoolery is a broken education system which misallocates the bulk of its resources into a grossly substandard tertiary education

The idea that govt is responsible for free tertiary education should be expunged from our constitution.
The overriding focus of govt should be how to utilize the energy and ingenuity of our youths from 18 - 35 year olds in productive capacity as a means of catapulting our economy into accelerated growth.

How useful are university graduates in our economy anyway?

Most of them are
unable to find employment mainly because they possess no practical skills to run vital aspects of an economy

The entire gambit of a 5-year minimum education & national service (sponsored by govt funds), which produces individuals with little or no practical skills is a failure
Govt is better served focusing on empowering school aged children such that they are well skilled in all the basic workings of the equipment most utilized in all sectors of the economy

Students should be proficient in 1 or 2 practical skills before graduating secondary school
A gap year (or 2) should be introduced after finishing secondary school, where youths are compelled to seek apprenticeships in all sorts of small businesses such as:

tailors, phone repair, plumbers, furniture, electricians, welders, etc

Every small business should have at least
1 secondary school graduate or 2 to intern for 2 years before being eligible for JAMB

Govt should ensure a minimum stipend is paid to them by their employers

Every secondary school graduate should pass specific technical exams to show they are proficient in some basic skills
after completion of their mandatory 2 years of internship

Universities may even decide to admit students based on their extra skills (in addition to grades) in order to help lower their costs of maintenance and administration

Those who decide not to pursue tertiary education
can then be gainfully employed, or empowered to start their own businesses

Every Nigerian should be empowered to pay for their basic livelihood in addition to govt taxes.

The idea of subsidy, as opposed to empowerment, should be discarded

Nigerians shouldn't be given scraps
Nigerians should be empowered to be productive in order to buy the highest quality for themselves

If students have money in their pockets, they'll be free to choose the best schools they want to attend (including private universities)

Nigerians need empowerment & not subsidy!
