I have zero opinion of whether the PMs lead adviser should be at these meetings but I'm quite sure his being there would change the dynamics.

This Cummings / SAGE story is a perfect policy story for our age. A real issue (gov may be hiding behind "scientific advice"), gotcha story that isn't (chief PM adviser sits on scientific committee), push back too far ("nothing to see here"). Depressing.

We shouldn't dwell too much on last week's talks. 2nd rounds of trade talks typically demonstrate the many reasons why the process will take years. So no great surprises. Over time negotiators would resolve most issues, leaving last for politicians. But if you refuse the time? 2/
Putting in place unprecedented deadlines means fast decisions. The EU has almost certainly made theirs - they have precedents, acute awareness of dometic interests, and an international reputation as a tough negotiator. They want a deal, but only on their terms. What of UK? 3/

As expected a downbeat readout by Barnier of progress on UK-EU future relationship. This point on level playing field needs to be stressed particularly - because the UK position is simply out of step with recent trade policy developments.
No surprise Northern Ireland was mentioned again. Expert opinion is divided on whether the UK government knows what it signed up to and is denying it, or doesn't even know. Either way a crucial issue for both EU and US trade deals.
Is the UK strategy the belief that we'll get a deal because we're willing to walk away without one? To walk away in June? To sign something in September / October and claim victory? All far from clear and needs to be discussed (but bigger issues....)

The Number 10 comms gurus blaming business for not extending transition even though business says the exact opposite. A refusal to extend clarity means greater uncertainty now. Failure to reach a deal in December will mean uncertainty.
Why should any inward investor in the UK believe that this government prioritises business over arbitrary actions?
The usual anti-EU suspects produce evidence-free platitudes for why transition should not be extended (sabotage trade talks, extend uncertainty).
