Inbox: Why are you making such fuss about scattered anecdotes of minor problems? Stats don’t look too bad.

Me: March 10th was when a doctor in Italy reported their hospital was collapsing. It got retweeted by colleague in England. Do you recall what happens next?
I know this is very old hat to people who have followed this story for months but you would be very surprised what sort of people are surprised by this.
Or, well, plausibly you would be absolutely unsurprised if you’ve followed this story for months.

How I learned of the importance of idempotency for work queues: a thread.
About 9 years ago, I was the owner and sole developer at a company which delivered scheduled reminders over phone calls. The logic was, essentially, “If someone needs a call today, and they haven’t been called, put a call on the queue to them.” We ran this check every 5 minutes.
One day, I made a change to an unrelated part of the queue worker which caused them to block (not process any events, including calls). Importantly, a) they usually took 5s to run and b) we had never had something fail to execute within 5 min before.

The Dragon’s Path (Dagger and Coin series) was apparently sitting on my book pile since 2011, lamentably. It features dragons and banking.

Not enough dragons and not enough banking, but of course I’m going to say that.

Extremely good, and second book so far better than first.
Also features occasionally inspired dialogue, such as this between a hero and old guy whose background the hero only partially knows.

Old guy: *request*
Hero: No.
Old guy: I won’t force you.
Hero: You couldn’t.
Old guy: I could, but I choose not to, and I hope you remember that.
Hero put precisely zero skill points into Genre Savvy.

The cryptocurrency economy is now busily creating what appear to be synthetic Tether derivatives and do I need to explain how that is going to work out.
“You know what my biggest problem with Tether was? The notion that it could be backed by anything.”
In other news they added $2 billion of issuance last month because apparently Tether is a flight to safety asset.
