Let me be perfectly clear here:

Just because the feds have said hospital policies should not put disabled people at the back of the line does not mean disabled people will automatically trust medical professionals to take that guidance to heart—especially given the inherent
Ableism associated with the medical field.

This might be shocking, but, many disabled people hold medically-related trauma, and the current state of affairs has turned our relational dynamics with the medical field on its head.

Because now disabled people are advocating for
Needs of many of the the same doctors and medical professionals that normally gaslight is about our bodies and symptoms.

Ok, so first things first: many disabled activists, including myself, have noted that the #COVID19 response from both the public and government have been steeped in ableism. This is true, but there are different models of disability that inform the way people approach
Disability and therefore respond to issues that stem from it both internally and externally.

There are dozens of them. But I will only be talking about the 5 as noted above because they’re what I believe have been most prevalent in this response.

Ok, so today’s thread is going to serve as a lesson on language, ableism and just how deeply it’s engrained in our society and I want to talk about the pandemic and a very commonly used phrase:

“I’m sick of you.”

It’s incredibly important that as you (especially as white disabled people) talk about the higher rate of death for black people, you understand the cultural dynamics surrounding self-identification as part of the disabled/chronically ill community.

Many won’t, and you’ll
Have to get over it. The fact is that because of racism, healthcare disparities and ableism, many black people who could definitely identify as disabled or chronically ill won’t.

When racism says your mentally incapable and physically animalistic, at the same time doctors
Ignore your symptoms, think you’re drug-seeking, and can’t feel pain, all while you can’t navigate the spaces you used to because they’ve been gentrified into unaffordability—and the remaining spaces are inaccessible, you tend not to “opt into” another community that presents
