There is a middle ground. Broad testing with rapid contact tracing, iterative testing, and quarantine (even presumptive quarantine) would be a far better solution than what we're experiencing now, and far less deadly than what is being proposed by some.
Doing this would actually delay the spread, and potentially delay it significantly enough that the "area under the curve" actually is reduced as the virus is able to be "snuffed out" in some geographies.
It won't likely be a permanent eradication — our new normal will be persistent vigilance — but this approach would result in both economic recovery and reduced infections by this aggressive risk mitigation/avoidance throughout the country.
