1. I started playing "Green Hell" on PC, a very unforgiving game where you try to survive in the Amazon rainforest.
2. On my first game got killed in like 10 minutes, because the stone axe I crafted gave out after about two swings, leaving me with nowhere to sleep but the ground, and I woke up with worms under my skin and had no way of getting them out.
3. But I've gotten better. I found an abandoned pier next to the river with a hammock where I could sleep safely, and was finally able to build a fire. There was a pronged fishing spear there too, but the moment I walked into the river to use it I got bitten to death by piranhas.
4. Finally, though, I've gotten the hang of it. I learned where the local fruit and nut trees are, and built a little trap that crushes cane toads under a rock, so I can cook them up. That plus the fish trap I found next to the pier gives me a steady supply of food.
5. I cut down enough trees to build some gardening boxes, so I can grow the herbs I need for bandages in case of snake or spider bites, or rashes from wasp and bee stings. I even made some mud bricks and built a storage box (I've gathered more stuff than I can carry).
6. But the game can turn on you in a heartbeat. It was getting late on Day 11, I had already eaten my fill of fish and cane toads, when I realized I didn't have enough wood to keep the firing going while I slept.
7. No biggie! I had already cut some trees earlier that day, and the sticks and logs were lying out there in the forest. It was dark, but I could be there and back in a jiffy.
8. I'm walking back with the logs in the dark and "OUCH!" I guess I stepped on a spider and got bit. Now I've got a fever and a venom wound. But that's okay, I've got a leaf bandage for that in my pack.
9. By the time I get back, the venom warning is going off, but I still have a fever. Okay, I've got a herb for that in my storage box, which I can brew in a tea. Lemme go get it. YAWN! I'm really getting tired now.
10. I go out back to the storage shed and ... pass out from fatigue. On the ground. All night. I wake up with worms burrowing under my skin, and an even worse (untreated) fever. And my fire is out. At least I now have a bone needle to dig out the worms, at the expense of sanity.
11. Will update.
12. Update: oh crap! I've seen natives lurking around my camp. A couple days ago I was going hunting and heard them talking, and saw two of them before they saw me, but I just turned back and hoped they would eventually go away.
13. But this time I was gathering fruit on the hill just above my camp and I heard this weird singing and there he was, I could see him just sitting there singing in the distance, but he couldn't see me.
14. And then I look online and it says that then you burn campfires for too long, the natives come and hang out outside your camp and sing to get themselves all revved up to launch their attack. Not. Good.
15. So I'm going to start putting out my campfire from now on, and hope they lose interest. Or maybe switch camps? Anyway, I went out looking for them again early in the morning and they weren't there anymore. Creepy.
