I feel very happy as a user of technology when it acts as leverage for my ability to think and very unhappy when I am forced to do bookkeeping, conversions, etc which it would clearly be able to do better and which distract me from actual thought.

Partly this is a combination cultural problem at the bank and skill problem for the developer.
Partly it’s “just” an underlying technology problem. The framework/language should have solved for this by now.

Speculating with a moderately high degree of confidence given previous experience: somebody made the inevitable pushback on the requirements document and someone else said “I dunno Compliance already signed off; let’s just make the user do it.”
