I have stated in my various OP-Eds and in my book Fit for Purpose that the incoming democratic government was fully aware of the extent of the debilitating inequities inherited from the apartheid state. A compelling obligation was to build a capable state.
But building a capable state could only be possible if the governing party was motivated by the highest possible level of consciousness for social justice. I now see a resurgent energy to urgently provide the secondary rights provided in the Constitution.
The sad reality is that it had to take the Coronavirus to re-kindle the level of consciousness that should have come naturally. It is a failure of humanity I will never understand.
