Matt Hancock in response to @NickMartinSKY says that the govt was aware of risk to care homes from January

If so question is why testing wasn't made more available to the sector earlier? And lockdown for the sector come sooner?
This thread was written on April 2nd. Makes clear care homes were a ticking time bomb not least because of situation apropos agency staff going to multiple homes in a day. Either that needed to stop or testing needed to be brought in for those staff much sooner.
We are where we are and rolling out of testing will be very very welcome. But these are all questions which at some point will need answering.
Another question: if govt has been thinking about care homes since January, why has PPE been so difficult for them to obtain?

NEW: Raab confirms that 52000 tests took place yesterday. Target is 100,000 by end of tomorrow.

Government has updated historic deaths by an extra: 3811 deaths in total from 2nd March-28th April

765 new deaths for today- that includes deaths in care homes and community.
It's really important to get daily care home and community deaths in the figures.

Question is why it couldn't happen before (as other countries have done)

Wonder if there would have been greater focus on care homes before now if that had been the case.

NEW: Today I spent the afternoon with two frontline NHS staff at a large NHS trust.

They said they felt compelled to speak out about the PPE situation they're facing.

This is what they told me- it didn't make for easy listening.

It included stories of using out of date PPE.
They told me they and their colleagues are scared. They know they are global supply problems but it doesn't stop them feeling let down by government, NHS management and Public Health England.
Gowns, aprons and masks continue to be a huge problem.

In particular, they told me that they had been using masks that were out of date. They'd had to use masks which were supposed to be used by 2016, even on one occasion, a mask which had a use by date of 2008.

Yday I reported on the surge in deaths in care homes in one local authority area. Now I can compare England and Wales.

Data shows that care home deaths for the year so far are up 78.5% on average for same period in 2015-19

For most recent week of data: they're up nearly 250% 👇
What is interesting about this data, as you can see, is that even when you strip out confirmed Covid-19 care home deaths, we're still way above normal for these last few weeks in terms of care home deaths.
A few possible explanations for this

1) Underreporting of covid19 in care homes (lack of testing)

2) Covid exacerbated other conditions which worsened and that's what they died of

3) people who didn't go to hospital because of something else and should have done and then died
