NEW: Raab confirms that 52000 tests took place yesterday. Target is 100,000 by end of tomorrow.

Government has updated historic deaths by an extra: 3811 deaths in total from 2nd March-28th April

765 new deaths for today- that includes deaths in care homes and community.
It's really great to get daily care home and community deaths in the figures.

Question is why it couldn't happen before (as other countries have done)

Wonder if there would have been greater focus on care homes before now if that had been the case.

Second day in a row govt hasn't hit 100,000 test target, even by its own (contested) definition.

Could be a weekend blip but as I said on Newsnight on Friday government target wasn't just hitting 100,000 on one day- but every day.
If 100,000 doesn't happen in a sustained fashion it suggests structures aren't in place to distribute tests as required/all effort was thrown at one data which gave an artificial picture.

Listened to this today- well worth your time. Main takeaways:

-there’s still so much we don’t know
-it’s remarkable we know as much as we do thanks to global scientific effort.
-we are going to get out of this, through science (medicine/vaccine) but it’s going to take a while.
Also interesting moment when talking about a vaccine, Whitty says that’s the only situation (ie where a vaccine was available) where you’d pursue herd immunity as a public policy outcome.

That certainly wasn’t what the noise from elements of govt (and Vallance) was in March...
Wondered whether this was a rejoinder or a sort. We’ve certainly seen Whitty being more vocal in what he thinks about certain policy outcomes, of late...

Did they reach the 100,000 target?

It doesn't appear that 100,000 tests have been conducted and in the last 24 hours.

Nonetheless also true to say that capacity has rocketed quickly. We're not far away.

But it's really about what we do with that testing...(thread)
100,000 target was always an arbitrary, political one. There's no epidemiological basis for it.

Talk to most public health experts/scientists and they'll say that what we really need is a strategy to put them to use

Principally, it's about test, track and trace.
