Shopify originally launched this as Arrive, a convenient way for customers of independent Shopify merchants to track their packages.

Arrive had 16 million downloads before it rebranded to Shop today.

Shopify spent two decades building tools for the supply side of this emerging marketplace, slowly on-boarding a long-tail of suppliers to the internet.

It then used a broken piece of e-commerce - delivery tracking - to quickly aggregate the demand generated by its suppliers.
By aggregating demand, Shop:

- Increases conversions
- Provides better attribution for merchants
- In addition to email, SMS, Facebook/Snap ads, etc; merchants can run campaigns through Shop (+ drive retail traffic) + manage them via Shopify's CRM tools

Under the guise of “package tracking”, Shop notifications can consistently re-engage customers to spur additional purchases in the ecosystem

Getting Shop on every customer's phone also gives Shopify a channel to eventually challenge Cash app for other consumer financial products
Shop also further entrenches Shopify Capital. Shopify previously had intimate knowledge of merchants' performance, and Shop could give much more precise data on consumer in-app viewing behaviors and more levers to pull to help influence its merchants GMV.

Combined with Shopify's PoS hardware, Shop’s “Follow” and “Local” features provide a mobile touchpoint to drive physical demand to merchants

All these products + Fulfilled by Shopify help support the long-tail of consumer spending and capture more of GDP
