It's Tom Moore's 100th birthday.

We’re delighted that Tom has had thousands of cards and presents (which he has donated to charity, of course, because he’s a legend).

Now let's give him what he’s REALLY been waiting for - a commemorative twitter thread from Doncaster Council.
We, like everyone, have been incredibly moved by Captain Tom’s fundraising exploits. His efforts will never be forgotten, and the £30m he has raised will help countless people.

We want to pay tribute to him too, and have been wracking our brains about the best way to do it.
Make a giant Art Attack-style mural of his face out of dustbins?

Should we arrange flowers on the A630 roundabout to spell his name? (While adhering to social distancing rules, obvs.)

Maybe we could have 100 hours of applause in his honour at the next Full Council meeting?
Then it hit us – dedicate one of our historical threads to the great man!

A Yorkshire Council paying tribute to a great Yorkshireman!

So, here are some other things that happened in 1920, the year Tom was born:
Probably the biggest thing to happen in 1920 (sorry, Tom) was the Treaty of Versailles coming in to action, and the League of Nations being born.

It was the first time that global powers had joined together in an attempt to stop future wars.
ALMOST as importantly as this, the first ever FILMED wrestling match took place in the USA, and was shown in cinemas.

Just 75 years later, The Rock arrived on the scene and people bothered to start watching it again.
Did you know that in 1920, the USA essentially had a female president?

President Woodrow Wilson was ill, and his wife Edith made the majority of executive decisions.

Of course, because of the SCANDAL a WOMAN IN CHARGE would cause, it was never really publicly acknowledged.
In better equality news, though, the USA added the 19th amendment to the constitution in 1920, guaranteeing women’s suffrage.
Rabbits everywhere celebrated when the first dog track to use an imitation rabbit instead of a real one opened.

Carrots all around!
The US postal service also stopped people from posting their children in 1920. Yes, really.
Because postage was cheaper than a train ticket, some people used to just mail their children to a destination.

Tell that to little Timmy next time he moans about his iPad.
Joan of Arc was officially made a saint, 500 years after her death.

We won’t lie, we’re holding out hope that in 2520 WE will receive some form of recognition for these twitter threads.

We’re not saying we should be made SAINTS, but maybe a plaque or something. Dunno.
There’s no sugar-coating it, 1920 was a difficult year.

There were global conflicts, political strife, terrorism, diseases and poverty. Maybe that’s why Captain Tom has such an amazing inner strength.

Tell that to little Timmy next time he moans about his iPad.
So, from us to you, Tom - #HappyBirthdayCaptainTom.

We appreciate you. There’s not greater exemplar of Yorkshire grit and determination than you.

Well done, duck.
