Yesterday, Mayor Lightfoot let landlords and banks take an unenforceable "Solidarity Pledge" while renters live in fear. We did a little research. Come meet the team of banks and landlords Lightfoot trusts with your housing (and the donations they made to ensure this outcome) 1/9 Lightfoot looking at
The only Alderman Lightfoot could find to stand with her is Harry Osterman, the Real Estate and Housing Chair. He's bought and paid for, so he let the banks and landlords write their own pledge, instead of standing up for working people and legislating. Alderman Harry Osterman. Cashed 47 real estate checks in last 2 years, including from Chicagoland Apartment Association standing right next to him.
One of Lightfoot's pledge takers, The Chicagoland Apartment Association, is evicting dozens and paying off politicians. Chicagoland Apartment Association. Board members filed 31 evictions during pandemic. $1.8 million annually to lobby politicians.
The Mayor herself has filled her coffers with real estate money, so it's not surprising her "Solidarity" Pledge was written by landlords. Mayor Lori Lightfoot took $150,000 from billionaire Sam Zell and his wife. Zell has been called
We can't trust landlord advocacy group NBOA to fulfill this pledge -- they're already violating it. National Building Owner's Alliance. Vice President Marty Max filed 7 evictions since the stay-at-home order.
These are the people the mayor trusts to protect homeowners and renters? Bank of America President Paul Lambert. Paid bonuses to staff who foreclosed on homes during the 2007 foreclosure crisis. Donates thousands to City Council members
These folks got their press conference with the Mayor because they paid for it. And they're still evicting Chicago Association of Realtors. Prominent CAR Member Michael Tolliver has filed 17 evictions since the shutdown began. Donates thousands to City Council members, including Ald. Osterman.
But look who wasn't invited to have input on this Pledge. Zero tenants. Zero Tenant Unions. Zero Community Organizations. Zero Alderman who don't take real estate money.
So City Hall is playing the same game: let bankers and landlords write their own rules. What we really need is thousands to form tenant unions in response. What we need is to #CancelRent #Cancel Mortgages and #LiftTheBan on rent control.
