I attended a military school in Calabar, and it was a very hectic,it was a place where they sent all the strong-headed, stubborn (aka coconut head) to, so you could be flogged, punished and taught into shape. There was this senior in yellow house.
my immediate senior, she was always sick, always wearing a cardigan and carrying a bottle of water.
I often wondered why her parents had enrolled her in that kind of school,she was always in the sick bay everyday. Because of her health challenges,she was deemed untouchable
because it was said that any hard labour could affect her greatly.
I didn't actually know what exactly was wrong with her, but I knew she was always sick.

They matter.
To you and many others,what they go through might seem insignificant, but they matter and it's time we make it known.

Sickle cell Anaemia, is not ogbanje(evil spirit),it doesn't mean they won't live long, many of them outlive non-sicklers.

It is not ONLY African,
it affects other races too. The SCD patients are NOT drug addicts, they simply take PAIN RELIEVERS because of the pain they go through.

Please,do not discriminate them,they go through so much and it is NOT a DISEASE people,it is a carrier state,
where if the both parents have the sickle cell trait i.e AS, it is likely to be passed on to the unborn children.

These are facts to the myths we used to believe about sickle cell anaemia.
Let us all be aware. Sickle cell patients matter and it's truths are meant to be known.

What are the types of sickle cell disease?
Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It normally has two alpha chains and two beta chains. The four main types of sickle cell anemia are caused by different mutations in these genes.
Hemoglobin SS disease
Hemoglobin SS disease is the most common type of sickle cell disease. It occurs when you inherit copies of the hemoglobin S gene from both parents. This forms hemoglobin known as Hb SS. As the most severe form of SCD,
individuals with this form also experience the worst symptoms at a higher rate.

Hemoglobin SC disease
Hemoglobin SC disease is the second most common type of sickle cell disease. It occurs when you inherit the Hb C gene from one parent and the Hb S gene from the other.

Genotype is the genetic make up of any individual. This is all the information found inside the individuals cell.

1. Genotype AA
This genotype has the most advantage when it comes to choosing a partner, people with genotype AA can reproduce with any other genotypes without having the fear of producing offspring with the sickle cell disease
2. Genotype AS
People with this genotype are at great disadvantage when it comes to choosing a partner because they are sickle cell carriers and can only settle with genotype AA alone. This is to Avoid them to have offspring’s who will carry the sickle cell disease.
