@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot An excellent piece. It really reinforces the point that UK tax avoidance on this scale cannot be tackled from within the EU. The reason my piece focuses on CFC rules within the ATAD is that the EU renders them ineffective within the EU. Ireland will, of course, be absolutely...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...insistent that the UK fully aligns with the EU's ATAD, ironically painting itself as a "good guy" in the process! However, the CFC rules in the ATAD say this:
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...which means that provided the Irish subsidiary isn't a brass plate, it can be used to avoid UK tax and the UK couldn't impose a CFC charge. The EU is clear...even if the UK parent explicitly states the purpose of the Irish subsidiary is to avoid UK tax, there's nothing the...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...UK Government can do about it. And it's not just Ireland, according to the Zucman report I referred to earlier, the UK loses even more to Luxembourg than it does to Ireland. Billions every year...just to these 2 jurisdictions. The UK absolutely must not align to the ATAD...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...if we are to deal with the jurisdictions responsible for the majority of our Corporate Tax losses, which are EU member states. The debate is on this is bizarre. It's very rare to find remain supporters who are prepared to do detailed research on this, and so they have this...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...absurd notion that leaving the EU will mean we will miss out on anti tax avoidance measures. It's difficult to stress the point enough...the EU actively enables corporate tax avoidance. The amount of tax avoided that goes to Caribbean Islands is absolutely dwarfed by the...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...amount lost to the EU. The rest of the EU can't do anything about it because tax is a member state competence, and there is no way Ireland and Luxembourg will be agreeing to throw away the basis of their economic models. It's a point Brexit supporters have really failed to...
@ScotsForLeaveEU @AllianceBE @TheBluetrot ...get across. If people want a tangible benefit of Brexit it's that we can have full control of our tax avoidance legislation and do far more to prevent £billions of tax being avoided to Luxembourg, Ireland etc.
