Took this photo past 2am July 2016. Drug suspects, police claimed. Father was pleading to be interviewed. He wanted to tell the truth.

12 hrs later, they were dead. "Nanlaban" inside a police station. Saw their dead bodies at the morgue.

Still haunts me to this day.

The death of father-and-son Renato and Jaypee Bertes turned a Pasay City police station into a crime scene with blood splattered on the floor. It was one of the 1st cases of "nanlaban" under PH drug war.

Jaypee left a pregnant wife and a 2-yr-old girl.

Why were the Berteses killed?

Police first said Jaypee tried to grab a policeman's gun with the help of Renato.

July 7, 2016 police incident report said it was the 2 of them who attacked and grabbed the gun.

Sworn statements of 2 police said it was Renato who grabbed the gun.
Why were the Berteses arrested?

Police said they were caught gambling in the street and drugs were recovered upon frisking.

Wife said they were about to sleep when police barged in to arrest Jaypee. Renato didn't want to leave son so he was also taken. A witness said the same.
In this follow-up report for TV Patrol, we asked the Pasay City Police what was the basis for the arrest of the Berteses and if there were search or arrest warrants. Watch the explanation.

Investigation by Comm on Human Rights found:
-Berteses illegally arrested because they were inside their house
-Illegal gambling never happened
-They were tortured
-It was not possible for them to attack and grab gun given their condition
-They died of multiple gunshot wounds
As a result of the Bertes and other cases, we produced this 2-part report on the rights of the accused during arrest and while under detention.

Murder cases were eventually filed against the 2 police officers in April 2017.

In June 2017, we checked on updates on the case. The 2 policemen were still at large and the wife continues to fear for her and her family's safe.

Bandila:
Despite reports we did on the Bertes case, you can't shake off the feeling that you could've done more to prevent thousands of others like the Berteses from dying.

In this sense, media, human rights orgs, collectively failed.

Something to think about on World Press Freedom Day.
