One explanation for the confusing notion that RCP8.5 is both “unlikely” & “most plausible” (to 2071) is that it is one of the only scenarios available for climate research. So to conduct such research it must be used

We will no doubt see more of this sort of confusion about scenarios with SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5, both implausible & best used for exploratory research. Yet, they are the only baselines for the next generation of climate modeling studies. So convoluted justifications will result.
