Dr. Bereket got his MD from the University of Gondor College of Medical Sciences (GCMS) in the late 1980s and joined the armed struggle for independence in 1990. He currently works as the Head of the Pathology Department of St Paul Hospital & Millennium Medical College in Addis.

In Eritrea, Dr. Bereket was medical director of Senafe hospital, where he served the community with utmost dedication and resisted transfer to other posts after the hospital was demolished during the border war. #Eritrea #Yiakl

During that precarious time, Dr. Bereket stood by the most affected & displaced people and often used his personal connections to fill the acute shortage of supplies.

As the intervention and systematic harassment against professionals increased at the ministry of health, Dr. Bereket was forced to flee to Ethiopia. He took the risk despite returning twice from international travel prior to that.

When families of the former senior state officials in prison (after Sept. 2001) were left in disarray and forced to flee to Ethiopia then, Dr. Bereket was hosting and helping them regain confidence while working hard for many to settle in a third country. #Eritrea #Yiakl

When most of the graduates of Orotha Medical School without their accreditations fled to #Ethiopia, Dr. Bereket has been going out of his way to support them so that they can continue to work in their fields while exploring other ways to further pursue their specializations.

Living in Ethiopia, Dr. Bereket is in a unique position to witness the mass exodus of Eritreans to Ethiopia. To many Eritreans Dr. Bereket has been a credible source and point of contact to share the conditions on the ground. #Eritrea #Yiakl

Dr. Bereket is one of the very few Eritrean activists who visit the Eritrean refugee camps in Northern Ethiopia regularly to monitor their living conditions and inform those
who can better their situation. He has been a champion of those in need. #Eritrea

Since the borders opened, many Eritreans have been traveling to Ethiopia -either referred or on personal capacity - to seek medical treatment. Dr. Bereket has been a valuable mentor to the Eritrean communities as they adjust to their new lives. #Eritrea #Yiakl

Currently with the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bereket has been working to educate and inform the Eritrean public of the virus and on how to take necessary precautions against Corona virus. He has partnered with other healthcare professionals to help Eritrean refugees. #Eritrea #Yiakl

Dr. Bereket continues to work relentlessly to help Eritrean refugees in and outside of the camps in Ethiopia. Every day, he takes huge risks to his safety and professional work but he never waives from being in the front lines to help his fellow #Eritrea|ns in need.
