[Thread] 1/Incredible, this account is showing a video (put sound on) of gunshots being fired in Qatar to support coup rumours. However, the video was clearly lifted from a Qatari account who opened the window to mock the rumours. The person then dubbed sounds of gunshots on it.
/ Here is the original real video from @Alhamli_70 with the original audio (not gunshots). Just Alhamli saying sarcastically there are gunshots, maybe it's the birds...
I
/ The initial video being circulated of a night sky with the sound of gunshots, and voices saying 'risas? risas, wakra wakra" (trans: gunshots, gunshots?) is actually from April 2018, from near a royal palace in Riyadh. See last 8 seconds of video aljazeera.net/news/arabic/20…
/ It should be added that one of the account that shared the doctored video is clearly a propaganda account with 60000 followers. It even has another account called "Qatar Interim Gov", which has incidentally, been suspended > @qatarinterimgov
/ So in the space of about half an hour, at least three of the videos being circulated to suggest there has been a coup are fake. One has doctored audio, another is from China, the other from Saudi. I'll wager most of the other videos are similar
/ If life has taught me anything, it's don't trust an account called "Saudi journalist" who is also a medical student according to his bio has 53 tweets and 13 followers....
/ Also, three separate accounts using the same bizarre expression of "mega unconfirmed rumours" of a potential coup in Qatar. Most people don't speak like that, let alone three ostensibly diverse account
/ This seems to be a new one, lots of accounts taking images from Flight Radar as if to somehow prove flight activity (regardless of what it reflects) is indication of a coup. The plausible hint of OSINT to try and bolster the perceived credibility of the propaganda
/ Very disturbing. Editor of @IndyArabia - @Adhwan -is promoting the 'Wakra' hashtag (Wakra is the place in Qatar -where gunshots 'were' reported). The top reply so far already someone trying to say that Qataris are confirming there is a coup via @Ben_Firnas
/ Bahrain's @Alwatan_Live newspaper, with a verified account, is also spreading the fake video suggesting a coup attempt in Qatar. Bahrain has laws against spreading fake news, presumably there will be no consequence here
/ There's obviously a predetermined narrative. One aspect of it is that Turkish troops are now involved in the matter. Obviously this is designed to inflame regional politics, as opposed to just parochial matters
/ Update: Here is a network analysis of the hashtags, with some explanations about the sockpuppets and influential accounts involved:
