1/ Pet Peeve Rant: Hunting to extinction.

We used to have many Chomskys, Elons, Jim Watsons, etc. Yes. They‘re difficult to deal with. Maybe worse than that. Much worse. I get it.

But there seems to be *pleasure* for some in being the soul who hunts these lines to extinction.
2/ When it comes to Smallpox or plague I do understand this. But the idea that we should have no surviving examples of such Mavericks suggests we see them as pathogens.

I’m not arguing a Lamborghini isn’t too loud and doesn’t waste gasoline. But it’s a Lamborghini, not a Camry.
3/ I’m not even arguing that we shouldn’t keep Mavericks away from accountants, school teachers, and people with delicate sensibilities. Nobody wants a Lamborghini tearing down Main Street.

But god dammit, stop trying to turn *every* last patch of earth into a 15MPH school zone.
4/ Not everyone gets excited to wear sensible shoes into our Honda Accords to check in for our 10 O’clock team compliance presentation.

Maybe the gal too hung over from flirting at the bar last night & who overslept is going to have another brainwave and invent a great product.
5/ I personally don’t drive a Lamborghini. I drive a boring 4-door sedan. And I do find Lamborghinis and their owners pretty irritating & insufferable in traffic. So I think I get the issue we all have. What I don’t get is the desire to make them illegal and to junk the last one.
6/ So if you think that a world free of Chomsky is going to work so much better or that in the absence of Jim Watson, there would be many more great Roslyn Franklins, consider this: maybe. Maybe you’re right.

But it is *also* possible we celebrate Dr Franklin because of Jim.
7/ In fact, the two are always far more connected than we imagine and always in complicated ways. You can celebrate the dependable humble tractor that feeds us and decry the growling Aventador crawling up your tailpipe at the traffic light.

Yet Lamborghini makes them both.
End/ I spent almost a week with Jim Watson a few years ago. He was boorish, insufferable, arrogant and childish. He was also a straight up genius. And in hours of conversation he told me many of the nicest things about Dr Franklin that I‘ve ever heard.

So: think before you hunt.
