NEW: @ONS says that the number of total deaths in care homes has increased in the last week to 7,911 (up 8.1% on the week before). Deaths at home also up 5.8%.

In the last week care homes deaths were 35% of total deaths. Has been steadily climbing. Was 26% a fortnight ago.
When looking at excess overall deaths it’s true that week 17 (week ending 24th April) was the first week to show a fall in deaths since week 12 (March 20)

But it’s still worth remembering that England and Wales still up 11,539 on the five-year average for Week 17.
This via @ONS @henryjameslau shows respective curves for overall deaths in different settings and the 5 year average for each. 2020 deaths line massively up on 5 year average everywhere but now falling in hospital. Deaths still climbing at home and especially in care homes.
