New SSP3-8.5 (not possible) PNAS paper out today is giving folks a much needed nostalgia boost in these tough times

How ridiculous is it?

Assumes in the future people will choose to live in warmer climates (red curve) rather than the observed distribution for past 6000 years
There’s no new climate information in this paper, climate change is real & these projections are widely available

New here is the overlay of scenarios (misused as predictions) of the global distribution of people in 21st century, assuming people do not respond to climate change
We have described in detail the misuse of scenarios in this new paper

The new PNAS paper ticks all the boxes, and a few more

Well done all around 😉
PS. Less fun, there is more than a hint of climate determinism at play here, idea of an optimal climate niche dates to Huntington
