Developing countries have a lot to teach the developed world. For one thing, they're a lot more practiced at contact tracing and isolating those exposed to a virus. It's a basic building block of public health that we've forgotten, to our detriment. 3/

Mr. Rogers always said in times of crisis, look for the helpers. The story of the battle against Ebola is a story of literally thousands of helpers, people who put themselves in harm's way to help some of the poorest nations on earth. 4/

Liberians, Sierra Leoneans and Guineans who could have left instead dedicated themselves to saving their countries. Many lost their lives doing so. Their stories are amazing examples of selfless sacrifice. 5/

One often overlooked detail of communities coming together to fight a virus: Christian ministers and Muslim imams visited each other's congregation to spread knowledge and build trust. Spreading knowledge & building trust is KEY to getting public buy-in to fight a virus 6/

I focus a lot, too, on the American response to the pandemic. An inspiring array of Americans went to help - CDC experts, 3,000 US troops, Christian missionaries, MSF volunteers. It was the best of America, going above and beyond to help those in need. 7/
