Thread on why social media sucks sometimes. Many sarcastic replies to this tweet suggesting county council isn’t focused on real things. This probably used to be true, but it’s not anymore. But social media encourages judging snapshots, not assessing several stories over time 1/
First, racism IS a public health care crises, especially in Allegheny County, where racial inequality is among the worst in the nation. Secondly, county council has passed and introduced binding, meaningful bills lately, I will detail some below. 2/
Council introduced a bill mandating large release of inmates at jail during COVID. Council recently introduced a bill to provide paid sick leave to EVERY WORKER IN THE COUNTY! Council & Fitzgerald worked together to send mail-in ballot applications to all county voters 3/
I get the compulsion to dunk on governments, it’s fun. But do some actual research or you are just spreading the false notion that governments are useless. Which only perpetuates the cycle of ignorance that is the REAL reason governments don’t respond to our needs often enough 4/
Where was sarcasm when council was mostly just handing out proclamations to places like Cochran Auto? But social media doesn’t hold the mundane to account, even imo, Pittsburghers should be more mad about governments handing out dumb awards, than resolutions over race 5/
Again, social media perpetuates this, since only stories that illicit comments breakthrough & reach masses. It’s bad for journalism and worse for holding governments accountable. I am not sure how to fix this, but would be nice if tech companies were working to address it 6/
And sarcastic repliers should know all legislative bodies, even Congress, pass non-binding resolutions. There’s an ark in RHOBH about one calling for end of international industry of eating cats & dogs. Even I scoffed, but honestly it’s better than just being snarky online. End/
