There's a lot of interesting stuff here, some that I agree with and some that I disagree with, but one thing that jumps out at me is how 'entitlement' is now seen as a causal explanation for why men rape people which offers explanatory power. There's a

2/ fuzziness to this logic, because of course you could take any act you don't like committed by any person and attribute it to their sense of 'entitlement' -- they felt 'entitled' to do it, of course! -- but this sorta reminds of "It's about power, not sex" storytelling about
3/ rape, where the goal seems to be just as much about portraying the perpetrator in a certain light that is compatible with political claims as about offering a truly plausible and thought-out explanation about why some people do terrible things.

2/ I guess the advantage of having it be the government is, if you're in the U.S. at least, they're accountable. But most progressives seem intent on giving huge amounts of speech-policing power to, like, Google and Facebook, which consistently shocks me. Less accountable!
3/I was surprised at how during the Carlos Maza thing (before he came out as explicitly pro-internet-harassment), so many progressives openly endorsed standards for YouTube that would be tighter than what prevails on basic cable. Complete myopic lack of foresight about tradeoffs.

There's now a veritable subgenre of petition written by academics trying to get other academics' work retracted on strictly ideological grounds. This one, like so many others, doesn't locate any actual falsehood in the article in question.
2/ By the usual standards of... well, everything, the most extreme an argument you're making, the more evidence should be brought to bear. Calling for an article's retraction is exceptionally serious in academic circles. And yet these petitions tend to be very close to evidence-
3/-free. Instead, they pain in very broad, motive-impugning strokes, flooding the zone with morally charged claims so as to make it less likely anyone would want to bother defending the targeted article/academic. The Tuvel 'controversy' was the clearest example of this I've seen,

1/ Oh man NOFX's "The Decline" backed by an orchestra YES PLEASE.

This reminds me of a very stupid story from my college years. My friend from my hall, who is on Twitter but who I won't annoy with this, insisted he didn't like NOFX. I wanted him to hear

2/ "The Decline" so I took the MP3, renamed the artist to "The Crashers," and was like, "Hey, you might like this song by this band 'The Crashers.' " He LOVED the song (what suburban male 18-year-old doesn't?) and then I was like "Haha screw you that was NOFX." As you can tell my
3/ college years were unbelievably crazy. Just got up to absolutely insane stuff like surreptitiously renaming MP3s. Not once in awhile but ALL THE TIME. Makes me nostalgic to think about it.
