The first time I ran a code in the ICU, it was the nurse who kept me calm, and helped me bring the patient back to life. (She even whispered in my ear, “I know you can do this”)
The first time I did a central line by myself... I wasn’t alone at all, bc a nurse was there by my side from start to finish.
The first time I cried because I lost a patient, a nurse was there to hug me and remind me that “all the good doctors still care about their patients.”
The first (and only) time I lost control of a bleed when pulling a balloon pump in a really unstable patient (my fingers went totally numb after holding pressure for 90 minutes), a nurse was there to jump in and help me.
The first time I had to walk into a room, filled with 20 of a patients family members with tears streaming down their faces, and I had to break the news that their loved one had just passed away... a nurse was by my side with tissues, support, and love.
Thank you to all of the nurses, for all of the first, second, and third times you have helped me. You’re as much a part of my medical training as any attending I’ve ever worked with and any book I’ve ever read.
I am the doctor I am today, because of the amazing nurses I’ve had the honor to work with. Our job is hard, no one ever said it was easy. We deal with life and death every day. But there’s no one I would rather learn from, learn with, grow, share and care for our patients than
all of the nurses I’ve been honored to know my whole career.

Sending my appreciation to Nurses everywhere for National Nurses week! (PS - that’s me in the middle, yes with butterfly lead LOL)
