Visakhapatnam gas leak-
MoS Home G Kishan Reddy spoke to Chief Secretary and DGP of Andhra Pradesh, extends all help from Centre. An NDRF Team has reached the spot where the gas leak took place. An official said that people living in a 5 km radius were exposed.
Policemen posted in the area are also affected. Mr. Reddy asked the chief Secretary to use Private hopsitals for treatment as Government hospital is full. Hundreds would require to be put on ventilator. Several people have complained of bleeding nose and breathlessness.
Styrene gas- the C8H8 Class III flammable chemical had the potential to immobilize the body within 3 mins of inhalation, said an official. The gas leak took place at LG Polymers Plant.
The incident in Vizag is disturbing.
Have spoken to the NDMA officials and concerned authorities. We are continuously and closely monitoring the situation.

Principal Secy to PM Dr PK Mishra held a high level review meeting with Cabinet Secy,Home Secy,NDMA,NDRF, Director AIIMS and medical experts on Vizag gas leak.Dr Mishra directed sending of team of experts to Vizag and measures for relief,rescue,short term,long term medical impact
Dr. Randeep Guleria, AIIMS on being asked if the gas has long term impact similar to Bhopal gas leak- chances of long term impact is less.
There is no specific antidote, no treatment to reverse it, the treatment is mostly supportive.
Dr. Guleria-Clothes are to be removed, exposed eyes can be washed with water, tissue and tower to clean the skin, individuals have to be monitored for breathing difficulty, some will have to be put on ventilators. Many will require oxygen facility. Nebulization can also be given.
Dr. Guleria- This is a illness that is not universally fatal. Depending on degree of exposure effect can be seen.
Dr. Guleria—Styrene can cause harm to humans by ingestion,inhalation. Irritation in throat,breathing difficulty, wheezing,respiratory distress.Affects the brain leading to headache,nausea,unsteadiness, problems in walking,in high exposure can lead to coma and irregular heart beat
DG NDRF @satyaprad1 :due to continuous water spray, the inflammability of the chemical has lessened. How many kilos of gas has leaked is a matter of investigation. The gas has an impact of 6-7 hour and it had been leaking since 2.30 am, so the impact has lessened by now.
. @NDRFHQ DG- NDRF has specialized teams, the CBRN team happens to be in Pune. The Commandant Anupam Shrivastava and his team of four will be flying from Pune to assist. Situation under control, hardly any leakage there, we will be there till the leakage is completely plugged.
NDRF DG S.N Pradhan- till the morning, 20-25 people were critical but they are all stable now. The death toll stands at 11.
