I think it is important for all who measure renal function to know that creatine supplements do break down to some extent into creatinine. This may give a false elevation of serum creatinine leading to a lower eGFR. Asking about creatine supplementation should be included. Image
Creatine (CR) has typically been thought of as a sports supplement but with continuing research on other uses for health (brain, heart, sarcopenia and frailty) the potential is to find many taking this who you wouldn’t necessarily think would, young and old(er). ImageImageImageImage
I found a review article that I was going to use to detail this. “Efectos en la función de creatine con fines deportivos” or “Effects on renal function of creatine supplementation for sports purposes” with English title “Effects of creatine supplementation on renal function.” Image
However, I was reading the “creatine supplementation” section and was surprised by some of the comments especially since they took the time to research and use quality work by @RBKreider @Jordan_theCoach Bruno Gualano and others.
Two specific comments referenced caffeine and creatine and creatine and dehydration. See the pic and translations below. Very absolute statements. ImageImageImage
I wanted to know their reference that would allow for such absolute statements. It was @medlineplus.
Their page has some good information and some questionable. It gives references but doesn’t reference within the article slowing my fact checking. Update?
medlineplus.gov/druginfo/natur…
The review article is absolute about caffeine by Medline was less so which I think is more appropriate (@ScottForbes14)? Image
The review article comment on avoiding in the heat came right from the Medline page. However it references a paper that didn’t come to this conclusion. (Screenshot below). ImageImage
Again, I do think that it is very important for anyone who may work with someone taking creatine to know that supplements may raise creatinine leading to a false diagnosis of renal disease.
Some good points from the review article:

“Can creatine supplementation simulate kidney disease? Yes.”

“In healthy subjects who use creatine supplements for long periods of time, does their kidney function deteriorate? No.”
