Our society too often confuses liberty and license. It has been frustrating to see respected conservatives make this same error throughout this pandemic. @EWErickson went off last night (LoL #understatement), and I’d like to add to his sentiment. 1/
Has government over-reached? ABSOLUTELY. Is pushing back & building momentum against tyranny with public opinion good? Yes! Is how we do this essential? Always. More so now. 2/
We should be mindful that *most* restrictions were/are reasonable based on the best information known *at the time*. In many cases conservatives are better informed & in front of the curve, and are vigilant for liberty so we understand quicker where the overreaches are. 3/
But here’s the rub: building public opinion to shift erroneous public policy decisions shouldn’t also come with a desire to set fire to the institutions which are there to protect our way of life. Seek change without fomenting rebellion. 4/
We’ve severely damaged our economy. Historians will tell us the full extent of this folly. But let’s not also destroy the very ideals behind our uniquely American approach to self-governance at time when the fabric holding it together is threatened the most. 5/
Likewise, your virtue signaling about not wearing a mask indoors at public venues, or your need to call out every place you’re “boycotting” because they’re “too dumb” to understand the “truth” and stand with you for freedom is tiresome and disingenuous. 6/
Don’t lose your roots as conservatives. If a private business is trying to abide by government recommendations that you think are ill informed, work to inform. Make your case. Don’t demonize the private business for doing the best they can. 7/
You want to wrap yourself in Niemöller as if you are standing up for the oppressed, but you’re screaming *at* the oppressed. And you’re getting more people to do the same without regard for the specific circumstances. Stop it. 8/
But most of all, as @EWErickson said last night stop being whiny bitches about everything. You are the conservative equivalent of this lady:
