Life will be different after quarantine. Businesses we relied on or those we simply enjoyed may no longer exist. Jobs we held only weeks ago could be gone. We won't come out of isolation unscathed & neither will our economy. But we can do our best to ease that pain.
So far, we've taken some major steps to help band-aid the financial struggles w/ loans, stimulus checks & extended unemployment. We are now moving further away from the immediate emergency decision-making of this pandemic & desperately need a bridge to the “new normal”
Some of our leaders - indeed many of us - have discussed sweeping structural transformations for the new future that is slamming up against us. But we also need to focus on the medium term—what happens after September, when so much of the emergency federal funding stops?
1/3 of Americans will have trouble paying their bills THIS month. Fewer than 1/3 of Americans have enough money to last 3 months & that one time $1200 check is likely long gone. Over 33M people unemployed. The future will be ok; the BRIDGE to that future is what concerns me
We need a plan—like the one Canada has—that provides us w/ monthly income, directly from the federal government, until AFTER the pandemic ends, so we can restart our lives & businesses. We need relief both financially & psychologically.
Getting to the “new normal,” whatever that looks like, will be hard. It's likely to take years to once again see the growth & prosperity we experienced before coronavirus. But if our leaders provide necessary relief & the opportunity to rebuild, we can get there together.
