There is growing evidence of covid deaths linked to poor quality employment conditions. ONS report shows women dying most frequently in care work, men in cab/security work, neither has sick pay.
Care homes are reseeding to community and vice versa, partly because symptomatic carers are continuing to go to work because they can’t afford to be off. I know I’m banging on about this but it’s a clear source of transmission and death and would be peanuts to change it.
From someone who works in social care: “My employer does not pay for the first 3 days of any sick period. As many are on min wage, they can’t afford to be off. They cannot even afford the monthly union subs, so low is their income.”
The govt has scrapped the 3 day SSR wait. But DWP told me last week that the rebate scheme which has been set up to accommodate the govt paying SSR still hasn’t been set up. It’s clear that until it is some employers in care (and elsewhere) not yet paying from day 1.
