I recently published a @kumupowered presentation with my take on the system dynamics behind the COVID-19 crisis: kumu.kumu.io/covid-19
As expected, the first "But why doesn't it show [this factor], [that factor], or [the other factor]?" question came rolling in quickly. And those questions are welcome and encouraged!

But I answered with what I felt was a pretty good blanket response, so I'm threading it here.
There are a huge number of factors and variables that would and should be present in a high-resolution map modeling dynamics of the system and predicting outcomes at specific points in the future.
My map doesn't fall in that category—its a medium-resolution, bird's eye view of the system that enabled this crisis.
Its primary goal is to show how powerful a systems mindset is: one single person (me), with very limited time (I made the map while juggling my full time job, side hustles, & childcare for a six-month-old) can still use the basics of systems thinking, loop identification, etc....
...to achieve an understanding of this crisis (and any complex problem) that is drastically more nuanced and thorough than the mainstream discussion.
Imagine what our world would look like if these same system modeling tools and ideas were the norm, rather than just another niche, neat idea—imagine how much more civil and thoughtful public discourse might be, how much more effective decision-makers might be,...
...and how much easier it might be for experts to get the resources they need to create high-resolution predictive models that _do_ include [this factor], [that factor], [the other factor], and [the factor none of us even thought of].

#systemsthinking #complexity
Bonus points: Since my COVID-19 map is public, anybody with a free Kumu account (no credit card required) can make their own editable copy and add/remove different factors, put their own spin on it, etc.
