Pandemic and hurricanes, double whammy 2020 season. For @RedCross, @fema, etc., the planning for hurricanes has changed. Evacuations (however inexact the weather modeling) will be called earlier -- to give more time -- with focus on hotels rather than large shelters. 1/

Thread: some early (its early) thoughts on CDC guidelines released without fanfare late last night. First, timing. In a crisis that follows normal planning, an incident command (WH has inserted itself instead) has a planning cell that is guiding policies for days ahead @cnn 1/
It makes sense. You want to have a group not overwhelmed by the day-to-day who are determining how the response would want to position itself in the future, let alone transition to recovery. In other words, what we do today should head towards a plan for tomorrow. 2/
All states have decided that they are "opening up" in some fashion already. The CDC guidelines posit conditions for that opening up that should have been disclosed weeks ago. It's all so late; we are always so late (testing, supply chain, closing, etc) during this response. 3/

A vaccine NEVER saved a life. Only a vaccination has. Remember this during WH presser today about vaccine identification and manufacture. Seems fast? A vaccine still needs to be distributed in the homeland. A basic logistics challenge. 1/
Not convinced WH does logistics well? Could it be the logistics failures with tests, masks, gloves or ventilators? Some background on how it should work based on previous vaccination programs. From @theatlantic on the "who gets it first" issue.

GOOD NEWS. After 31 years, a suspect has been arrested in 1988 death of Scott Johnson who was found at the bottom of a cliff in Australia.The police refused to investigate, said it was suicide. Scott was gay. So were 87 other men found dead for no cause.1/

His brother Steve, my close friend and colleague, knew that Scott had been killed, thrown from the cliff, the victim of a hate crime. But times were different then; police didn't care; society didn't view the LGBTQ community as equal. Gay men were hunted for sport. 2/
For 31 years, Steve persisted and demanded. Times changed. Police chiefs changed. Societies changed. And the investigation was finally reopened. This is a lovely 2019 story about Steve and his search for the true story of his brother's death. 3/
