[Thread]1/ Today we have seen another uptick in disinformation on two hashtags "inqilab_fi_qatar" (coup in qatar) and the related "what's happening in Qatar". As we saw on May 4th, mostly Saudi accounts are re-trending these hashtags by circulating doctored videos of gunshots
2/ The below image shows about 15900 tweets involving around 8700 unique accounts, all using one of the two previously mentioned hashtags. As you can see, a lot of accounts are discussing the 'coup'. I am interested in the verified accounts spreading the #disinformation
3/ After stripping away the noise - Here is an image of most of the highly connected verified accounts involved the topic. Not all of those shown are using the hashtag, some are just being 'targeted'. However, from this, we can explore who is promoting the #disinformation.
4/ We can see Saudi influencer @monther72 (389k followers), Saudi poet @Alshaikh2 (434k), Saudi columnist @70sul (101k), and Saudi news channel @EKH_brk are activte. Interestingly, the first 2 accounts were also very active in promoting the coup disinformation a few days ago too
5/ The same discourse is being promoted, involving Turkey, gunshots, and military clashes... It seems that many verified Saudi accounts can lie with impunity. #disinformation
6/ Here is a nice graph showing all the verified accounts that have mentioned or retweeted something with one of the aforementioned hashtags. The majority appear to be based in Saudi. Nodes are sized by who has been retweeted or replied to the most, or mentioned.

2/ I'd never heard of the two of them before, until yesterday, when I stumbled across both accounts taking an interest in a disinformation campaign seemingly emanating from Saudi Arabia. Cool I thought, some Americans taken an interesting in Gulf politics... #disinformation Image
3/ Kidding, it was totally uncool. Both accounts were spreading disinformation and Saudi propaganda. They have been hacked/appropriated!! Aaron Persinger is no longer crooning, but has become 'Mustafa', a pro MBS account and Saudi media figure #disinformation ImageImage

1/3 So the latest instalment of the coup in Qatar disinformation is the circulation of the video screens hotted below. It shows two kids playing and pointing their cameras at smoke. Absolutely no indication of when the video was taken Gunshots sound doctored. We know where it is
2/3 Below you can see two close ups of frames from the video - a blue sign with writing on. This sign, along with the screenshot of the park (see the trees and red column) indicate the park is actually The Qatifiyya Park Legtafiyya Park in Doha (see bottom right image)
3/3 Not sure where the original video is but it may surface. Safe to say it one in a series of either doctored or unsourced and misattributed videos with smoke and gunshots. It is also being shared by the same verified accounts as the last batch, e.g. @s_alharthi11 @Norashanar

[Thread]1/ More on the concerted effort by accounts to campaign against the appointment of @TawakkolKarman . A number of accounts on Twitter and FB are engaging in the often suspicious behaviour of copy and pasting of the same text, namely the one pasted below
2/ As you can see from the video below, there are a lot of these identical tweets. Excluding those that get retweeted, I counted around 642 unique tweets, replies or mentions using exactly the same phrase. It is unclear how many of these accounts are real or sock puppets
3/ We can also see evidence of this copy and paste behaviour on Facebook, although the search function is somewhat more limited, so we don't get a full sense of the potential scale of the campaign cc @TawakkolKarman cc @arusbridger
