British exceptionalism has reached the end of the road | Financial Times

This is rather good.

This is not the premiership Johnson anticipated. Well COVID has certainly be “global” whatever about Brexit Britain.

Entirely unsuited to Johnson’s bluff and bluster over reliance of an overweening confidence, fake optimism, and supposed stoicism.
COVID is no respecter of “national character”

The nostalgia of the VE Day parties was lost in the collision with the pathogen.

Exceptionalism is no tool in the organisation necessary to stamp out the virus.

Nor is repeating how “fantastic” is the NHS, systems, surveillance.
The “crunchy detail of policy, the east grasp of the dull but vital logistics of supply chains, strategic planning - Johnson has spent his live avoiding such things handing these “lower mortal” jobs to others with a cheery wave of the hand.

Yet this is part of leadership.
The coming years will demand nothing so much as a long unremitting slog to rebuild the economy after the ravages of COVID & the collateral damage promised by Brexit.
Part of me wonders whetherJohnson will decide that someone else would be better suited to so banal an endeavour
