Once in a while, everyone slips into depression over one thing or the other. Disappointments, failures and sorrow are necessary parts of our life events. We all encounter these things every time, albeit at different degrees. I’ve had quite a few frustrating moments in my life.
Sometimes, I wish the earth could just open up and swallow me. Each time I reach the breaking point, two verses of the Qur’ān come to mind: فإنّ مع العسر يسرا “And with difficulty comes ease”; and سيجعل الله بعد عسر يسرا “Allāh will bring after hardship, ease.”
With due respect to those who have taken their lives or are thinking of committing suicide, there’s nothing in this world that’s worth taking one’s life for. The life of this world is ephemeral and transcendent. What lies in the great beyond is more frightening, severe
and terrible than all the woes and sores of this world combined. The Muslim knows this well. This is why a sincere believer is neither desperate to live in this world nor to leave it. He accepts whatever befalls his as Qadar and accept it with full submission to Allāh.
From teens drinking sniper over boyfriend/girlfriend jilt, to hanging oneself over failure to pass JAMB/secure admission or debt issues, to jumping into the lagoon over loss of job, et cetera, none of the reasons for which people take their lives is worth
a drop in the ocean of what we all will face in the Ākhirah. It is reported in an authentic hadīth that a man from among those that came before the Prophet instructed his children to cremate his corpse and throw the ashes in the wind.
When he met Allāh, He asked him why he did that and he replied: “Out of awe of ur wrath, my Lord.” Allāh said, “I have forgiven you.” This hadīth teaches 2 things: 1, that no one can escape the punishment of Allāh, if He wills to punish; & 2, that His mercy outweighs His wrath.
If at all one must take his own life, then, it should be out of fear of Allāh and not out of worry over worldly matters. Whether we like it or not, what will be will be. Death is but the beginning of another tedious, arduous and perilous journey. It’s never the end of life.
Life continues inside the grave until we meet our Lord.

We all are worried and depressed by one thing or the other. Even some who live in affluence are depressed. We ask Allāh for safety. For us Muslims, we believe that Allāh is sufficient for us in all matters.

“Whoever thinks that Allāh will not succor him in this world and the Hereafter,
let them stretch out a rope to the ceiling and strangle themselves, then let them see if this plan will do away with ˹the cause of˺ their rage.” Q.22:15
