The Singavaram Ranganatha Swami temple near Gingee is one of the remarkable cave temples of Pallava era. It was carved out in one of the large rocks & one need to climb up to reach the temple. Researchers point the Singavaram could have come from Simhapura. #Walktotemple
The temple may belong to Mahendra or Narasimha Pallava era. In the sanctum, lord Vishnu is in Seshasayee form extending wall to wall. Brahma seated in lotus raises from his naval. The Devi’s are seated near his leg, other devatas including Garuda are seen around.
The temple also has Durga in a small cell, similar to what is seen in some other Pallava temples like Mamallapuram. The Durga here is in ‘Tri Bhanga’ form, with the right leg slightly raised & foot on Mahisha’s head. Four armed, she holds Prayoga Chakra and Sanka on top hands
The Ranganatha in this temple, seems to be the family deity of Desingu Raja (Raja Tej Singh) of Gingee, whose valour against the nawabs of arcot is well known & famous in folklore.
