A few people asked me a variation of this.

The @nytimes, @washingtonpost and other "mainstream media" are acting like the media outlets in a functioning democracy, where all sides of an issue should be explored.

On the other hand, the Fox-Breitbart right wing media. . .

1/
. . . act like media outlets in a totalitarian society, where what the Leader and the Media says is the "truth" and everything else is a lie.

Mainstream media has to adjust to the fact that there are now basically two sides, and one side is lies and propaganda.

2/
The things that people traditionally learn in journalism school don't apply in this environment, where the "polarization" is the result of one major political party trying to destroy the government. I mean that literally.

3/
They call the federal government the Deep State or the Bureaucratic State and they literally want to destroy it.

So they lie.

It's not the fault of the journalist. The problem is that one side wants to destroy.

The article isn't about journalism. It's about the startling world in which politicians lie on purpose to destroy, and journalists in a democracy are trained to present both sides fairly.

Mainstream journalists are seekers of truth. We need to support their efforts to adjust.
I've written Op Eds for NBC and CNN, and I'll tell you one problem: People want free news. They don't want to pay. So some mainstream news outlets rely on clicks.

If they have to rely on clicks, they won't be able to present the best news.
So they screw up. They messed up the "her emails" and they gave Trump too much air time.

Right wing has billionaire supporting their networks, right?

@TimothyDSnyder says we should all subscribe to as many good outlets as we can to support good reporting.

I subscribe to 6.
I'll add that it's easy to judge people harshly. It's harder to find a point of sympathy.

Here's the thing about traditional / mainstream reporters.

Trump and his supporters literally abuse them and call them fake. If the left also slams them, why would anyone want the job?
Think where we'd be without good investigative reporters.

Timothy Snyder says reporters are the heroes of our times. gijn.org/2018/04/17/his…
We're ALL on a steep learning curve.

Think how much we've all learned about disinformation since 2016.

We're all still adjusting.
