"they were too dark to have behind the words of the headline"
1) Seriously?
2) Increase brightness and blur. I do it all the time.
3) They could have just cropped the photo. They didn't need to show more of the classroom but erase them from it.

Repeat after my repeat because I've said this twice now. This wasn't a crop. The black kid was individually cut out of the image. They had to digitally cut around that black girl. That didn't happen to any of the other kids. (notice where the book ends)

You accidentally increased the brightness on the white boy's jumper, thus proving my point that they didn't need to be edited out because the letters are perfectly visible against it!
