Two weeks ago, a sick staff member of Mushin General Hospital, Lagos, tested +ve for COVID-19.

What ought to have been proper contact tracing turned out just a haphazard selection of staff for sampling.

@NCDCgov, there’s more work to do in Mushin.

Mrs B., the staff member, had called in sick and was admitted at the Accident and Emergency/Casualty Department.

The doctors didn’t detect it was COVID-19 — possibly because of familiarity with the ‘patient’ — until a trained nurse suspected and raised the alarm.

Her samples were taken; the result was positive. Dr. S, who treated her, turned +ve too.

After a week & some days, NCDC officials visited the hospital to extract samples from 15 out of almost 300 staff. At least 6 people — including Dr. E, Dr. A and Dr. O — turned out +ve.

Nothing like contact tracing; they only asked staff interested in running the test to indicate by penning their names.

Then they assembled some doctors, nurses and Pharmacy staff. And even then, some of the names on the list never got tested.

The sample selection was indiscriminate & mgt has been tight-lipped afterwards. Staff heard news of the +ve cases only behind the scenes.

After the second set of people tested +ve, staff got to the office someday & saw that Casualty was locked after it had been sanitised.

This was about a week after the first positive result came in.

Management did not say anything to anybody, hence staff were worried though afraid to talk, especially as work has continued without clear instructions for people to self-isolate.

While the doctors who tested positive have stopped coming to the hospital, work has continued for staff who had contact with them before the positive results were confirmed.

Staff of Mushin General Hospital want proper information flow from the management, so that they’re not in the dark.

And they want coordinated tracing of the contacts of the positive cases for testing.

Staff also want the entire hospital sanitised/fumigated, as they fear patients in the casualty Department may have contracted the virus.

Not too much to ask for, honestly, considering the ongoing sacrifice of front-line healthcare workers.

PS: I tried in the background to get @NCDCgov's attention on this matter but it didn’t work; that’s why I’m escalating.
