Let’s clear some things up, shall we? In no particular order, but a number of items related to Friday's announcement from #bced and #DrBonnieHenry. @bcedplan
#1 – some schools have been open this entire time. Children of essential workers have been in school this entire time. 1/
#2 – Dr. Bonnie Henry, who has been a trusted source this entire time, is the one initiating this plan to get kids back to school. She has weighed the risks and has the expertise. #bcpoli 2/
#3 – Comparing BC to other provinces/jurisdictions is futile. BC is well ahead of all the other provinces & the risks are different here.
#4 – If you are a teacher or support staff and have questions, your local union is there to support and get the answers to your questions. 3/
#5 – for some families, further opening the schools is a lifeline. Children w special needs may need the in-person support, there are vulnerable kids who rely on support from schools for food & personal safety, & mental health & well-being is as important as physical safety. 4/
#6 - modeling needs to be done to figure out how to go forward in September. While it may seem like our families are being used as guinea pigs and that’s scary, it's important that we have a way forward. 5/
#7 – each District will do things differently. Which is a problem when out in social media because it creates confusion. 6/
#8 – specific communication can ONLY come from your District on what it will look like in your District. Asking the province to respond to each specific is not realistic and would add to the confusion. 7/
#9 – cleanliness is going to be the biggest hurdle because it will require a complete shift in how Districts have been utilizing custodial staff this entire time. 8/
#10 – Going back to school is entirely optional for students. Don’t judge others for their needs as they opt or don’t opt to go back to school. 9/
#11 – @Rob_Fleming said Districts are expected to accommodate staff based on their individual needs. If you have an issue that precludes you from going back to work, you need to follow the proper channels like you would in any other circumstance. 10/
#12 – there will be no perfect conditions. Nothing about this is fair. There will be issues and those issues will need to be addressed. 11/
#13 – If you are a parent and your concerns go unaddressed, contact your admin first, then district level super, your school board, and then your MLA. Sharpen up those advocating tools! /12
