Thread on the new findings from our meta-analysis in
@BJSM today!

1. Yoga that focuses on movement (not chanting, meditation etc) can help ease depressive symptoms (SMD=-.41, p<.001) 🧠

2. More sessions per week seemed to have a greater reduction in depressive symptoms (β= -.44, p<.001)🧘🏽‍♀️

It doesn’t have to be long, even just a short yoga session can help. Something is better than nothing!

3. We reviewed 19 interventions including 1080 participants with Depression, Schizophrenia, Alcohol Dependance, PTSD, Psychosis: a moderate positive effect for yoga compared to control. 🤸🏽‍♀️🧠

4. Regardless of diagnosis, depressive symptoms were reduced with physically-active yoga.

Where do I find ‘physically active yoga’? Most gym/studio classes would be suitable, these are typically Vinyasa, Hatha, Kripalu and Iyengar styles of yoga.

5. Yoga is not a solve-all treatment, it’s simply another choice of meaningful exercise that can help play a role in managing mental health.

Important that we still support people to utilise usual mental health care treatments, such as medication and psychotherapy. 💊🗣
6. It’s time to change our perceptions of yoga: it’s not just for Instagram girls and Eastern hippies.

And no, you don’t have to be flexible to start yoga! (and no, wearing @lululemon is not compulsory).
Let’s make yoga safe and accessible for every body. 🧘🏽‍♂️
7. Physical inactivity is a risk factor for depression. With less access to exercise facilities 🏋🏽‍♂️ why not give yoga a go at home? All you need is some floor space. Not sure where to start? Try @yogawithadrianne, DownDog App or see if a local studio is doing livestream classes!
8. Future research should:
- use standardised reporting protocols
- describe the intervention components (asana, pranayama, mindfulness etc) and any modifications in detail
- Report adverse events and adherence
- Investigate effects on cardio-metabolic risk factors ❤️
9. Limitations of our review include:
- Not able to analyse what effect the type of yoga and intensity had on depressive symptoms, due to lack of data 👎🏽
- Did not compare yoga with true active interventions ⚽️🏊🏽‍♂️🏃🏾‍♂️
