I don't know the Indian word for Yin and Yang but the reality is that we Indians don't see anything as pure evil. Ravana was a great scholar and devotee, there is a soft corner for Karna - that's what Indian culture teaches us. Why a different yardstick for Nathuram Godse?
I was going through his court statement. It's crisp and to the point. It hinges on two points
1. Non-violence is impractical.
2. Gandhi's love for Muslims
It's a good read, but note, the version I used has a level of editor's bias as you would see.
I won't judge him, but I will ask you to infer his mindset and make your opinions yourself.
By opening his statement by declaring him a proud Hindu, he has already drawn the lines.
He says he is anti-caste. So, where did Godse being a Brahmin supremacist come from? What does that make of the 1948 anti-Brahmin riots?
While he tells he dabbled with Socialism as like everyone of that generation and read much over other topics, he specifically takes the name of Gandhi as a person whose views moulded him along with Savarkar. So, why was Savarkar blamed for what he became and not Gandhi?
Clarity of thought - serving one fifth of humanity is not much different from serving humanity.
Now starts the diatribe. Gandhi's views are impractical. Besides, there is nothing original in what he did. Also he questions why armed resistance against aggression is wrong(Marxist Influence?). And then, he goes on to quote instances and asks if Sivaji is a misguided patriot.
While Godse says Gandhi became a dictator, that too a whimsical and inconsistent manner and demanded fealty, the bigger question is, what facilitated this. Clearly, it's not easy for one without connections to parachute himself and snatch control!!
Power without responsibility. Those who weren't able to stand him simply left. In an ironic twist, Jinnah is one such.
Gandhi's love for Muslims - the case of Hindustani. "All his experiments were at the expense of the Hindus."
Inaction or covert support? The ultimate question even today is, what if Congress refused partition.
Gandhi knows Muslims won't care about him.
Gandhi is the Father of the Nation. If so, he is an irresponsible father. Rather, call him Father of Pakistan because he failed completely before Jinnah.
Bad news. He thought Gandhi as a person and not an ecosystem.
Now, the thinking gets muddled or warped. He blames Gandhi for all evils and because no law can punish him, it becomes his duty.
In two words,
And his closing comments. I believe in Karma.
My only question, why did the clarity of thought disappear all of a sudden? But yes. Whether Godse is right or wrong, it's the Hindu ecosystem which suffered because of him. Morality vs stigma - which one should take a precedence?
