Amazon is best known as the “everything store,” but Amazon has its hands in everything from healthcare to energy. As the company gains power during the pandemic, let’s take a look at the Kingdom of Jeff Bezos: 1/ wired.trib.al/7l4top6
Since Amazon began as an online bookseller in 1994, its power in the publishing industry has only grown. It owns Audible, Goodreads, AbeBooks, The Book Depository, and more than a dozen other publishers and booksellers across nearly every genre imaginable. 2/
What do Twitch and IMDb have in common? They're both part of Amazon. Same goes for Box Office Mojo & the digital camera review site DPReview. Amazon even owns the TV rights for a Lord of the Rings spinoff show. 3/
Millions of independent merchants pay to sell goods through Amazon, but many of the brands you see while shopping are actually just subsidiaries of Amazon itself. It has dozens of private-label brands with generic names that sell clothes, furniture and more. 4/
Amazon Web Services is the company’s big money maker. Reddit, Tumblr, Netflix, Pinterest, and Dropbox have all used AWS at one point or another, and the CIA's entire cloud services platform even runs on AWS. 5/
To power AWS data centers, Amazon contracted with multiple renewable energy companies to construct more than a dozen wind and solar energy farms. Here's Bezos celebrating the opening of the largest one in Texas in 2017 6/
Amazon also owns countless IRL "experiences," like the cashier-less Amazon Go store, Whole Foods, or, my personal favorite: a fleet of "Treasure Trucks," which dole out everything from raw steak to Philips Hue lights to people walking by. 7/
Amazon has a secret healthcare tech lab that goes by at least three different names, depending on who you ask: 1492, The Amazon Grand Challenge, and Project X. The company also owns medication delivery startup PillPack 8/
And let's not forget the equally-ridiculous array of companies & projects owned by Jeff Bezos himself outside of Amazon, one of which is literally built into a mountainside and designed to outlast us all... 9/ wired.trib.al/7l4top6
