Now up at ⁦@TheAusInstitute⁩ webinar - ⁦@zalisteggall⁩ raising concerns about lack of transparency & proper process of #CovidCommission
Cites IMF recommendations that decarbonisation be part of pandemic stimulus spending, eg climatechangenews.com/2020/04/29/imf…
Says it is important to continue with the National Cabinet process (as @GregHuntMP also talked about at another webinar this week). Says it will be important for dealing with the climate crisis.
Says the pandemic has shown that decisive early action brings benefits, which is also relevant for climate action. Urges PM @ScottMorrisonMP to take the opportunity to act on high emissions, sooner rather than later.
Following a critique of carbon capture & storage approaches, @zalisteggall says: We need sound economic management. We need to leave ideology out; this is a time of serious economic decisions being made that will impact generations to come.
She says: We need to ensure that public money is spent money wisely - and CCS isn’t it. She references the @4corners program this week re party politics and personal ambition having killed climate policy in Aust to date.
Says the LNP has been internally incapable of committing to long term climate action as a result of a minority of elements prepared to wreck the joint and hold the rest to ransom.
This is such a contradiction to Liberal ethos and economic mgt, says @zalisteggall – which is why she is an independent. "The cross bench is a great place to be, and I want to see it grow, it will ensure better governance and better democracy."
Says the private sector is miles ahead of the Fed Govt on climate action. (ie more responsive to community/customer wishes)
Says the States are doing much better on climate action, and are more proactive. All states and territories are committed to net zero by 2050; they are in step with private sector and most countries around the world.
@zalisteggall says the national cabinet structure needs to continue to deal with national climate policy and energy policy. Repeatedly mentions @AngusTaylorMP lack of commitment to reducing emissions
@zalisteggall calls for efforts to tackle the influence of fossil fuel industry on govt/policy, says it is like the tobacco industry/smoking lobby once was in its influence over policy.
