There are over 15k #carehomes housing approx half a million people. The vast majority of whom are, very elderly, and have underlying health issues.
So far, just over 12.5k people, have died, in a care home, and #Covid19UK was mentioned on the death certificate.
2>
In an average April, just over 8.5k people, would be expected to die, in care homes (all causes), this April, the total was just over 26.5k (all causes), with 8k attributed to #Covid19UK in some way.
3>
These figures are terrible, but, it’s still an average of less than 1 death, per home.
Some homes, will have had no deaths, some, many more.
What this tells you, is that, this isn’t a national failure, it’s a failure of individual homes, or groups of homes.
4>
What are some homes doing, that others aren’t?
How can some manage to keep their residents safe, when some, are unable to?
Does the death rate in a particular home, correlate to its @CareQualityComm rating?
It’s very easy, to simply “blame Government”.
5>
But, what’s easier, is for the care sector, to allow Government to take the blame, to deflect from its own failings.
And before, anyone starts, I’m not, criticising individual carers, although, they do have personal, and individual responsibility to ensure,
6>
that they operate, to best, safe practice.
There should, ultimately, be, an enquiry, into #care home deaths, and deaths, where care, is given, in the community. But, it should focus on the care providers themselves.
7>
Half a million plus elderly people rely on care (we all might, one day), so we need to learn from this.
Please, don’t just jump on the “blame Govt” bandwagon, if you do, you’re not only missing the point, but your also failing our elderly, and, ultimately, possibly, yourself.
