Enforcing compulsory institutional isolation at this stage of spread in Delhi is #contrary to principles of patient care and judicious use of resources.
Such a process will cause dynamics and disincentives which will fuel further spread of #covid in #Delhi. THREAD
The 'order' is based on the premise that home isolation is causing spread. Where is the evidence? Spread is by multiple factors.
If this is the premise then proposing only 5 days of institutional isolation makes no sense, +ve patients will continue to be infectious beyond 5 days
This will unnecessarily saturate healthcare capacity for cases that do not need facility monitoring. Leaving those who actually need facility care in the lurch. Possibly worsening fatality rates. Also exposing more health workers to patients who would otherwise have been at home.

Tabulated the topline results released by the #recoverytrial team on #hydroxychloroquine & #dexamethasone, and went over their protocol ( to better digest them.

Basic stuff:
- hospitalized patients @ 175 NHS centres
- open label, 5 initial arms
- thread—
Important point from #RECOVERYTrial protocol

- if a patient had a #contraindication to one of the intervention arms, according to the clinical care team at the site, that particular arm was not available to that patient at the time of #randomization
So if a patient enrolled in #recoverytrial had a contraindication to #dexamethasone, that patient was not allowed to be randomized to that arm. So the results need to be interpreted in the context of no contraindication to steroids: already on steroids, #immunosuppression, etc.

Ops, we did it again! Image denoising just leveled up!!!
Our new method can do so much more than just predicting a denoised image!
Let us take you on a short tour… (1/6) #CARE #denoising #uncertainty #diversity @Mangal_Prakash_ @sagzehn @jug_lab
What always bugged us with any CARE method is that a single restored output is created, giving the false impression that the input can unambiguously be restored. But some information gets lost in the noise, so this can obviously not strictly be true! (2/6)
A #DivNoising network is trained to know how structures in the data look like and can be used to predict diverse denoised outputs. In areas of the image where the input is ambiguous, #DivNoising will sample the space of reasonable interpretations.(3/6)

#ArtificialIntelligence has the ability to bring the fourth industrial revolution. Healthcare is deemed to be an industry which can get transformed the most.

He believes that the way we practice medicine now ( #ShallowMedicine ) relies too heavily on human inputs and is thus plagued by human biases and imperfections.

There are over 15k #carehomes housing approx half a million people. The vast majority of whom are, very elderly, and have underlying health issues.
So far, just over 12.5k people, have died, in a care home, and #Covid19UK was mentioned on the death certificate.
In an average April, just over 8.5k people, would be expected to die, in care homes (all causes), this April, the total was just over 26.5k (all causes), with 8k attributed to #Covid19UK in some way.
These figures are terrible, but, it’s still an average of less than 1 death, per home.
Some homes, will have had no deaths, some, many more.
What this tells you, is that, this isn’t a national failure, it’s a failure of individual homes, or groups of homes.

„GDP growth in crisis“ „We need to save the economy and restart growth.“

This crisis shows, how much we take growth for granted: its natural, necessary & good. However, this view is rather new. How did it emerge?

5 years ago, I published a book on this @CambridgeUP. Thread 1/
Yes, modern economies are structurally dependent on economic growth and accumulation. But growth is also an ideology: it unleashes promises, frames thinking, disciplines societies. This ideology only emerged in the 1940s, as did the term in public and academic discourse 👇 2/
What can we learn from this history? A lot🙃
First: „The economy“ is an invention that masks markets and profits as inevitable and natural. GDP statistics were highly controversial among those economists who first invented them. And this has large repercussions, to this day. 3/

As early as 3/1 we've shut down visitors, tried to mitigate spread. But we're not the hospital and have less resources. And hospitals rely on us to d/c patients who can't go home. We're taking your pts, knowing full well they may bee carriers of #COVID but testing was not done.2/
Simultaneously we've been forcing the hard conversations, trying to get patients/surrogates to understand the futility in #fullcode status + even hospitalization right now. Meanwhile families have not been allowed to visit in 4 wks +. Despite r efforts, #COVID is in our own 3/

Let me tell you about my dad's #care workers, who
- picked up countless plates of food he threw around the room
- wiped up his vomit when he drank too quickly
- answered his question "How old am I?" patiently a million times a day
- repaired the fridge door he unhinged at night
- made sure he wore his glasses & took them off when he fell asleep, so they wouldn't hurt
- coaxed, flirted, convinced him into washing himself as much as possible
- told him his wife/car/staff/dog were fine whenever he worried
- put on the radio w/ 70s music & sang with him
- celebrated Xmas Eve at the care home (ALL of them)
- had to hand in all their tips to the care home's social activities fund (so I bought vouchers instead)
- were with him, holding his hand, when he died.

And now tell me again that they're #LowSkilled.

*Happiness thread"

Happiness is a range of feelings from positive emotions to great joy.

Happiness changes the way we see ourselves and situations. Our happiness affects how we react in situations and interact with others.

#Happiness is a choice.

#Happiness is infectious

Researchers have found that happiness supports: a stronger immune system, stronger resilience in the face of stress, a stronger heart and less risk of cardiovascular disease, alongside quicker recovery times when overcoming illness or surgery
Happiness maximises our ability to look after ourselves. Happiness supports more exercise, better socializing, healthy eating, good sleep hygiene.

#happiness is a beautiful thing 😀👍🖐️

* Burnout thread *

Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

3 dimensions:

- feeling exhausted

- feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job

- reduced professional efficacy.
Burn-out is included in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon.
Burnout is more likely to happen if we:
1) don't feel valued
2) don't feel like we are making an impact
3) have no autonomy over a situation

I used Matlab for image processing for years. Tried to switch to Python 10 years ago but too many tools were still missing. Tried again 5 years ago and haven't touched Matlab ever since! The combination scikit-image + @ProjectJupyter was a real game-changer! A few more things:
On top of the great classics scientific stack (#numpy, #scipy, #pandas, #matplotlib) there's an entire ecosystem of new tools to handle all sorts of complex problems. E.g. #napari to visualize and annotate multi-dimensional data. @dask_dev to handle very large images.
Complex ML tools for image denoising like content-aware image restoration #CARE ( or point-scanning super-resolution #PSSR ( which are documented as Jupyter notebooks that really work "out of the box".

Marketing #fail of the month: I visited the big @TMobile store in Burbank, CA - planning on getting the new @oneplus 6T, but the @petelau2007 @JohnLegere love-fest is going to go sour very shortly, if my experience was any indicator.
Staff not only had zero product knowledge of the phone, but clearly didn't even care. I casually asked what the phone specs were (storage, camera), and the store associate begrudgingly took out his own phone to research the answer via the Web.
There were no specs displayed beside the only 6T in the store, shoved in a back corner. There was no @oneplus product-specific signage whatsoever. A basic rule of product marketing & sales is that you have to both #Know about your product, and #Care about it.
