Some further slides from today’s #bgsconf, this time on Pharmacy support to care homes.

Spoiler: it is a bit variable! ImageImageImageImage
It’s particularly variable how many care homes each Pharmacy team is supporting…

#bgsconf ImageImageImage
So what are the roles undertaken by Pharmacy teams in #CareHomes?

Lots of different things!

On @JeremyVineOn5 in spring 2020 I warned that the elderly were being taken back to care homes with covid symptoms. I was told by iain dale that I should be "ashamed of myself" for saying that.
@theJeremyVine shook his head and told me witheringly "there is no evidence of that." I was made to feel that I had uttered something despicable. But I had spoken to care home owners, not just read the papers
Everything I ever said on these programmes was to inform and help REAL people in the REAL world. And I was treated like a pariah. It was obvious that the elderly were being neglected. Its vindicating but depressing that this 2 YEAR (!) Judicial review confirms my statement.

Kerala film director Ali Akbar reveals he was victim of sexual abuse at madrasa. After 40 years he opened his mouth to narrate the horrible abuse he had to suffer at the Madrassa after he confided in one Kerala journalist Rajeena. Both being threatened now.
All this he revealed about five years back and when asked about speaking now, he said because of the fear from his religion, he could not muster courage to speak earlier. He also revealed that many of his friends spoke to him to have suffered similar abuses in Madrasas.
Ali Akbar had spoken all this in a
conversation on @CNNnews18 with Shreya Dondiyal. Here is the story - "Kerala film director Ali Akbar reveals he was victim of sexual abuse at Madrasa, when he was 8 years old in class 4 only.": news18.com/videos/india/k…

🧵WHY AREN’T WE TALKING ABOUT CARE HOMES?🦠

Today four brave care professionals, including a husband and wife, lift the lid on the appalling conditions facing residents and staff in England’s care homes, exacerbated by the looming mandatory vaccination deadline.

Through their courageous & very personal testimonies, I can reveal an alleged litany of failings inc:

• care homes at breaking point & residents left to wet themselves in isolation

• staff sobbing in corridors & regularly working illegal shift patterns due to under resourcing
• “endless pressure” and “bullying” from central HR teams to coerce employees into having the vaccine

• mental health insinuations against those choosing not to be vaccinated

• minimum wage carers pressurised into work when previously sick, who now face losing their jobs.

Tomorrow it will be 300 days since I had a meaningful visit with my mother, or held her hand. These photographs were taken exactly one year apart, on her birthday on New Year's Eve. She has lost over 2 stone and pretty much all all of her sparkle....
2/
The visits in the glass pod in the care home car park have been horrible for us both. Speech therapy has stopped so she has no speech now. She can barely hear. She used to read avidly and loved TV. She does neither now. Covid has swept through...
3/ her care home so all residents have been confined to their rooms for weeks. All visits were cancelled since early December and there is no news on when or if they will recommence. iPad calls are hopeless. The vaccines are being given so I've begged for "care partner" status...

1/. Extraordinary!

Sir Patrick Vallance yet again washes his hands entirely of any responsibility

Here, @PippaCrerar asks why the whole country isn't in lockdown

“The Tier decisions are not for me,” he says. Really?!

It’s a system designed to ensure the buck stops with no one
2/. I’m not a body language expert, but @uksciencechief’s habit of adjusting his glasses, looking away & um-Ing & ah-ing whenever he’s asked a penetrating question is getting wearily familiar.

Here is Vallance being questioned by @Jeremy_Hunt in May.
3/. In July, Vallance claimed he couldn't remember which date SAGE called for lockdown!

"The 18th or the 16th, I don't remember” he said

SAGE’s @JeremyFarrar says it was 13th

If these people’s memories are so bad now, imagine what they will be like in 2022 at a Public Inquiry!

Far from having laid a #ProtectiveRing around #CareHomes, as @MattHancock shamelessly claimed in May, and despite more empty promises, Govt's failing to deliver even the basics (i.e. #testing for t'most common transmission vectors) in AUGUST!

A case of
cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance… ?
And it's not like there aren't now clear *evidence-based* priorities 👇

Ministers should stop dicking around with their meaningless big number 'targets' and start ensuring that which NEEDS doing is done, before @10DowningStreet is charged with #senicide.

Its centralised initiatives are proving to be not only inept and ineffective, but actively dangerous. With body count.

Time for another approach:

THE WEEK IN POLITICS
#7MemesFor7Days of political immaturity, incompetence & idiocy —or evil by design?

(Stories tended to break late in the day this week, so I've gone for themes instead of days.)

1. Tory hypocrisy vis-à-vis #NHS laid bare by *clap on Sunday, clamp on Monday*
#7MemesFor7Days

2. Johnson made his mismanagement of C19 in #CareHomes worse by BLAMING them for the high death toll —a mistake he's tried to row back from, but refuses to do the one thing that might help: apologise, even tho' Starmer gave him 3 opportunities to do so at #PMQs.
#7MemesFor7Days

3. The Times announced Cummings will cut the UK's armed forces. One Tory backbencher (#TobiasEllwood)found his backbone & questioned *Why Dom?* Another(#MarkFrançois) took it as a cue to threaten a General he'd get Cummings on to him. Silence from DefenseSec...🙄

Johnson's parsletongue on #carehome staff was skin crawling

Too cowardly to face his mess, #Johnson now wants to blame others.

New to this?
You've got bits and pieces:

🔵 20,000 dead
🔵 Maybe they'd be dead anyway
🔵 didn't the Government throw a ring of protection around
🔵 PPE
🔵 And we defended the #NHS
🔵 it was unprecedented?

Sound right?

Congrats!
UKGov PR has worked.

What actually happened?
Let's just start this year Jan 1, to even do that you need to pretend the existing problems, effects of austerity e.g. reduced base level track and trace capability had no bearing.

They did.

But it helps isolate what Johnson and gang were directly answerable for
