Home Sec has written to @YvetteCooperMP and Home Aff Sel Comm. Patel confirms carers and families (+low paid NHS workers) won’t get automatic visa extension/leave to remain that other NHS workers receive.
Sorry that’s a correction to my previous tweet- rereading it language on death in service is a bit vaguer. Certainly it was announced at the time carers would be eligible.
In summary govt today has said:

- carers and non-medical NHS workers (cleaners etc) are not included in free visa extension for NHS medical staff.
-if a carer dies their family won’t necessarily be awarded indef leave to remain
-surcharge remains in place

Whitty says that with deaths having substantially reduced, we're now at roughly where we'd be in an average winter- but in late spring.

Gives a sense of how vital it will be to avoid a 2nd peak in winter itself. The pressure on every bit of health/care service would be immense
If you look at mortality averages over the course of the year (which I’m sad to say I’ve spent a lot of time looking at recently) we’re heading to the time of year where we generally have lowest overall mortality, reaches its nadir in late June/early July.
In that sense, with every week which has gone by, it should have got easier for health service, as with less general illness/death around there should be less pressure. After early July overall mortality will start to creep up again as year goes on and likewise pressure on NHS.

NEW: another 2.44 million Americans filed for unemployment benefit in the week to May 16th.

The 9 week total is now 38.6 million.

That’s 23.4% of the US workforce.
We can’t be sure if all of those are unique individuals. Some may have reregistered. Some may have found work between early wks and now.

Nonetheless seems likely that US unemployment will be close to Great Depression peak of 24.9%.

Bear in mind that peak took years not months.
Nicholas Bloom, Stanford University economist has estimated that 42 percent of recent layoffs will result in permanent job losses.

If that proves to be true then US would be looking at 16 million jobless.

Night after night we try to discuss and air the most serious of issues. The care crisis, testing, contact tracing, excess deaths and the rest. Night after night, the government chooses not to appear to make account of itself and talk to our viewers.
There have been roughly 1700 minutes of Newsnight in the last two months. Apparently not a single one of the scores and scores UK govt ministers were available for five or six of those 1700 minutes to talk to our hundreds of thousands of (up to a million) viewers.
Am sure there’s an open invitation to tonight’s programme to discuss, for example, this report from @mihretyohannes and me on last night’s show about the care crisis and the timing of guidance on lockdown to care homes.
