You’ve probably seen this video of a white supremacist accosting an essential worker and using “HIPPA” to justify why she shouldn’t have to wear a mask.

Not only is she a dipshit for saying “HIPPA,” but I think the ADA has been met in this video, let me explain.

A Thread:
Using the ADA, or Americans with Disabilities Act, as a weapon is a favorite method of white supremacists to skirt policies that benefit black and brown people (see voting in GA). Not only does it pit BIPOC against disabled people with this but it shows how selectively enforced
The law actually is and why people think disability rights is a “left wing issue” (among many other factors)

Can anyone tell me why she has no standing? You all use this reasoning all the time, to keep disabled people away from your events, keep us out of jobs and
gaslight us with false promises of inclusivity. Can anyone guess what it is?

It’s the term “reasonable accommodations.”

When the worker offered the woman to go into the store and to do her shopping for her, what he did was offer her a reasonable accommodation under the
ADA. I would argue he did his due dilligence.

Generally this applies to employment, but I think it could be applied here as well.

Which brings me to my next point:

Employers are also required to ensure that employees have policies in place to ensure that workers have their
Needs met and are not exposed to any factors that inhibit access to a safe and accessible workplace, this company is well within their rights to enforce their corporate policy to protect their employees and other shoppers.
So yeah, this method isn’t meant to work legally, but as a communications tactic to spark outrage.

We are in a public health crisis, but by branding it as a “freedom” and “rights” crisis you garner outrage and turn the tide.

On a side note, it would be interesting to
See if the store pulled a (Hobby Lobby) and tried to exclude themselves from any potential freedom branded legislation that endangered lives (ie choice to wear masks or not) on the basis that doing so was not pro life and violated religious freedom.

Fin.
Anyways, I’m tagging @coffeespoonie here because I told them I’d do this thread! 🥰
PS: I’m not just mad at white supremacists for using the ADA, I’m also mad at leftists for not knowing the law, or disability laws in general, well enough to combat some of this bullshit.

Now I’m done.
